Netflix Picks Up It's First African-American Animated Series
An original animated series “Mama K’s Team 4” has been picked up by Netflix to add to it’s diverse lineup of cartoons. The series follows 4 teenager girls living in a futuristic Lusaka, Zambia . The girls are called on by a retired special agent to help save the world.
Zambian writer Malenga Mulendema is the creator of this animated series and has won many awards for some of her previous work. She is currently working under Triggerfish Story Lab, which is a Pan-African talent search company backed by Cape Town based animated studio along with The Walt Disney Co. The cartoonist Malcolm Wope drew his inspiration for the series from hip-hop girl groups and 90’s R&B.
“In addition to giving African writers a global platform on which to be heard, we are excited to present this powerful and entertaining new animated series that brings Malenga’s incredible and unique vision to life on Netflix,” Melissa Cobb, vice president of original animation at Netflix, said in a statement. “‘Mama K’s Team 4’ has the potential to give a whole new generation of African children the opportunity to see themselves on screen in the powerful, aspirational characters they look up to.”
