Dear White People: The Series

The wait is almost over! After the wild success of Justin Simien’s 2014 hit, Dear White People, it was announced that Netflix would pick up the movie as a ten episode series. Since that announcement, not much has been said or revealed, but that wait is over with the first sneak peak or the Netflix reboot.

The first trailer for Dear White People was released, on February 9th and mimicked the movie trailer. The show will be released April 28th, sporting a 10 episode season. The trailer gives us a look into the cast, Logan Browning will be taking over Tessa Thompson’s role of Samantha White, whereas Brandon Bell will continue his role as Troy Fairbanks. Browning has also had other roles in Power and Hit the Floor. The trailer captures Samantha explaining acceptable costumes for her white classmates on her radio show Dear White People while flashing faces of white students in black face. The acceptable costumes being “slutty nurse, pirate and any of our first 43 presidents.” If this is anything like the movie, it’ll definitely be worth the wait.

The 30-second clip also flashes scenes from what looks like a Halloween party, very similar to the party in one of the final scenes of the movie. It seems as if the series will pick up around the same place the film left off. If you haven’t seen Simien’s 2014 hit, I suggest watching it before the series comes out, it is definitely a must-see. April 28th can’t come soon enough!
