Rappers Setting New Heights in 2016
2016 has been a great year for rappers. We saw many new faces emerge, rappers make a comeback and others maintain their dominance in the hip-hop dominance. Earlier in the week, St Louis rapper, Nelly made headlines as his album, Country Grammar went Diamond. Diamond is a huge accomplishment in the music industry. Being certified for Diamond means that the artist sold over 10 million copies. Other artists who had Diamond certified albums are Michael Jackson’s Thriller, Tupac’s All Eyez On Me, The Notorious B.I.G.’s Life After Death and Eminem’s Marshall Mathers LP, to name a few. This is elite company.
Another big accomplishment is being able to accomplish Platinum status whether in songs or albums. In 2016, 34 rappers have achieved Platinum status in either their songs or albums.
The most notable songs that went platinum this year are “Panda” by Desiigner and “Hotline Bing” by Drake. Both tracks received heavy radioplay, featured no guest appearances, great production and catchy hooks and choruses.
Other artists who went Platinum so far in 2016:
- Young Thug (“Best Friend”)
- Drake (“Hotline Bling” & Views)
- J Cole (2014 Forrest Hills Drive)
- Fetty Wap (“My Way” & “Trap Queen”
- Kendrick Lamar (To Pimp a Butterfly)
- Big Sean (Dark Sky Paradise)
- Rich Homie Quan (“Flex”)
- Drake & Future (What a Time to be Alive)
These are a few of artists who achieved Platinum this year. Even though the year is 75% complete, there is more room for artists to achieve Platinum as we close out the year.
