Charles Barkley Donates $1 Million To Clark Atlanta University
Clark Atlanta University has just received a donation for one millions dollars from former basketball player, Charles Barkley. The basketball hall of famer and co-host of TNT's "Inside the NBA, " announced on sports radio station WJOX-FM 94.5 that he donated $1 million to Clark Atlanta University as part of the trending Giving Tuesday campaign this past week.
Clark Atlanta University’s President Ronald A. Johnson issued a statement about Barkley’s efforts, “We are delighted to receive this generous gift from Mr. Barkley…This gift reflects Barkley’s tremendous heart and his desire to make a significant, positive and lasting difference in the lives of others. It is a testament to the importance of the transformative impact of CAU on its students, surrounding community, the nation and beyond.”
The University originally set a goal to raise $25,000 for Giving Tuesday. Giving Tuesday was sparked following the Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales, which promotes consumers to buy instead of using money for better causes and charities of choice. Every penny counts when running an institution for higher education, and Barkley made sure to help CAU with his monetary donation.
Barkley also donated the same amount to Atlanta A&M University as well for Giving Tuesday. Both universities are historically black institutions (HBCU). In the past, he has also donated to his Alma mater Auburn University and Morehouse College. Barkley is another celebrity using their wealth for the good of others. CAU’s Facebook campaign for #givingtuesday mentioned, “It doesn’t matter the amount or the area where you give to make an impact on the University that made an impact on you.” Charles Barkley saw clearly felt that donating to CAU was very important.
