2016: The Year Of Laurie Hernandez
If you’ve been thinking about how much the year 2016 has been a downer for generally everyone, then here’s one of the silver linings of this year: Laurie Hernandez. The 16 year old from Old Bridge, New Jersey first stepped on the scene as one of the breakout stars from the 2016 Rio Olympics, being one of the general favorites next to Simone Biles and Gabby Douglas. Winning two medals in her first Olympics, one gold for the team and silver for balance beam, Laurie was destined to do other great things.
Fast forward to fall and Hernandez is named as one of the contestants on this season of Dancing With The Stars, and immediately one of the crowd favorites. Many were surprised that the Olympian won, but no one more surprised than Laurie herself. Many fought this, thinking the show was rigged, stating she was the anti-Lochte, she is squeaky clean, and adorable, but producers fought back, stating though she was indeed a favorite of this season, the show was not rigged. Being a world class gymnast definitely helped her with the routines that wowed the judges and fans. Despite the few haters, Hernandez has not let that get her down.
Congratulations Laurie on all your success in 2016, and for being one of the bright lights in this dull year! Catch the video of her reaction here:
